The theft of express packages from Amazon and UPS is increasingly causing concern for US authorities. More and more express packages are being stolen during transportation, which has caused a lot of trouble for relevant departments. It is reported that since 2021, railway parcel thefts in the United States have caused nearly $5 million in losses.
Recently, a video of a package being stolen on a Los Angeles train has been circulating crazily online, with over 2 million views.
The video was filmed by CBS photographer John Schreiber, who said, "I learned about frequent train thefts in Los Angeles, so I went to the Lincoln Heights area to catch a glimpse." Schreiber explained that about a fifth of the containers he saw on the tracks had become the targets of thieves, and the doors of these containers were open and the locks had been cut.
In the video shared by John Schreiber, it can be seen from the naked eye that there are abandoned packages from Amazon, Target, UPS and FedEx all around the railway track, including some unused COVID-19 test reagents, toilet paper and some unopened packages.
It is reported that Lincoln Heights is a densely populated area in central Los Angeles and also a gathering place for train tracks Many trains are unloaded here. Here, thieves wait for the long freight train to slow down, then climb onto the freight container and use wire cutters to pry open the lock of the container for theft.
When thieves ransack these packages, they will take away valuable items that were originally intended for transportation to various parts of the country, leaving only some unnecessary or difficult to resell items such as medical bags and toiletries.
The frequent occurrence of such theft incidents has raised doubts about the safe delivery of express packages ordered through various portal websites such as Amazon, as this theft has been ongoing for some time. United Pacific Corporation stated that it has strengthened surveillance measures, including drones and other detection systems, and has recruited more security personnel for its orbit and fleet.
Los Angeles police and security personnel are also strengthening their management. It is reported that they arrested more than 100 people in the last three months of 2021, charged with "illegal intrusion and destruction" of the United Pacific Railway Company's trains.
