The single-screw extruder is primarily a drag pump designed to work with highly viscous fluids such as polymeric melts. The usual screw configuration has 20 or more turns with a pitch similar to the diameter, giving a long slender machine in which substantial longitudinal temperature gradients can be maintained and controlled.
